Isolde Sommerfeldt - Sculpture and Painting
The human form and landscapes form the basis of my work.
I sculpt and I paint. Each informs and compliments the other. Moving between 2d and 3d is stimulating as it allows me to explore composition, colour and form in various ways. There is beauty in the svelte woman, in the old hunched man; in the endless variations of the sky, the sea and the land. There is constant subject matter. Painting allows me to contain fleeting “coloured“ moments and to express various layers of emotions felt during that moment. I aim to capture the essence of the subject, to refine and pare down elements. This leads to “omission and exaggeration” and gradually more abstract formations. I may draw and scribe into the sculpture surface to accentuate or delineate. The viewer should feel free to touch, caress and enjoy the forms. My present sculpture work involves mould making and casting from original clay fired forms that are modular and are intended to be touched and handled. |
