David Weekes

painter

I studied full time for four years at the Heatherley School of Fine Art and the emphasis on rigorous observation instilled at the school continues to inform my work, which is predominately representative. I enjoy working in different media and I believe that a painting or drawing should be as much a celebration of the materials used as it is about the subject of the work. For example I like the tactile nature of oil paint and I try to express this with fresh brushwork and often a highly loaded brush. Likewise charcoal offers a wide range of possible mark making, and I also enjoy mixing media to obtain a different range of effects, e.g. my Thames series landscapes explore the use of a mix of dry and wet mediums (graphite, ink and acrylic paint).
I work across a range of subject matter, including still life, landscape and portraiture. With landscape I draw particular inspiration from the London urban environment.

My work has been shown in numerous national exhibitions and is included in several private collections.

WORKS ON SALE

1) Title - Seiser Alm Price - £475 Medium – Oil on Canvas Size (framed) – 54 x 64 cms Description This painting is based upon drawings and watercolour studies that I completed in the mountains during a trip to the Dolomites in January 2019. The mountains from part of the Langofel Range and the foreground of Seiser Alm is the largest high altitude alpine meadow in Europe.
Title - Thames Below Westminster II Price – £395 Medium – Acrylic, Graphite and Ink on Paper. Size (framed) – 88 x 69 cms Description – Part of a series of works based along the River Thames as it flows through London. This image is looking west from Hungerford Bridge towards the Houses of parliament.
Title – Still Life with Music and Mask Price - £275 Medium – Oil on Canvas Size (framed) – 34 x 44 cms Description - A still life painted under a strong directional light. I was drawn to how the speakers in the CD player seem to echo the eyes in the mask on the wall behind.
Title – Thames at Greenwich III Price - £950 Medium – Acrylic, Graphite and Ink on Paper Size (framed) – 94 x 128 cms. Description – Part of the Thames series showing the view across the Thames from the Greenwich Power Station towards the O2.
Title – Reading Price - £250 Medium – Oil on Canvas Size (unframed) – 40 x 30 cms Description – A painting showing a standing figure holding a book. I was interested in the contrast between the pink tee-shirt and the green back-ground; also the relationship between the book and the hand.
Title – Retired walking boots Price - £175 Medium – Charcoal on Paper Size (unframed) – 42 x 30 cms Description – My old walking boots which have given me 20 years of service, including a climb on Kilimanjaro, completion of the Thames Path and a six month visit to India. I wanted to make a record of these faithful servants with this drawing.
Title – Still Life with Glass, Spoon and Knife Price - £225 Medium – Oil on Board Size (framed) – 35 x 25 cms. Description – I enjoy still life painting that creates art from everyday objects. I have tried to use loose, fresh brushwork to convey the feel of the hard-edged nature of the metal cutlery and the contrast with the transparency of the glass.
Title - Tree in Winter V Price - £325 Medium - Charcoal on Paper Size (framed) - 87x66 cms Description- Part of a series of works depicting winter trees in Greenwich Park. I see these wonderful old trees as a testament to longevity and survival.
Title – Still Life with FT and Coffee Pot Price - £325 Medium – Oil on Canvas Size (unframed) – 35 x 30 cms Description – Another still life from everyday objects. Here I have started to push the brushwork to fracture some of the forms, whilst keeping the painting within the bounds of representation.
Title – Still Life with Coffee Pot Price - £125 Medium – Charcoal on Paper Size (unframed) – 42 x 30 cms Description – A still life drawing showing everyday kitchen objects. Here I have enjoyed the contrast of my own reflection in the mirror at the back of the picture with my reflection in the convex surface of the Coffee Pot.
